The backhand backhand wall break in padel is an essential defensive stroke in this sport. You must master it to be able to carry forward the points with guarantees when your opponents throw you deep balls to create difficulties with the wall game. You have to respond to these attacks and regain the initiative in the point.

Like all the strokes you make after bouncing the ball off the wall, it is essential to have a good reading of the trajectory to anticipate where you are going to place yourself and that you have a good positioning at the time of making a backhand wall exit of a lob.

Next, we will analyze the phases of the backhand wall exit.

Preparation or waiting phase

The waiting phase is usually the first phase for any of the strokes that we perform from the back of the court. Before performing the backhand backhand wall outlet of a lob:

  1. After "reading" the opponent's stroke, you must intuit where the ball will come out after the impact on the wall, analyze if the stroke is parallel or cross, the power and the effect.
  2. Move towards the position you have read as fast as possible.
  3. Follow the ball with your eyes, it may help you to aim it with your left hand (right hand for left-handed players).

Arming Phase

For the bouncing shots on the back wall in paddle the most important thing is to always show your shoulder to the net. At this point you must choose whether you want to launch a progressive lob so that the ball overcomes your opponents quickly without looking for a great height or a higher and slower lob.

Having said that, the following instructions to perform a correct set up:

  1. Turn your shoulders and step backwards letting the ball pass towards the wall to get fully sideways, adjust your position with short steps.
  2. Bring the paddle back (the tip of the paddle should point to the back wall) and adjust the height of the set up according to the height of the ball. On low balls it is very important that you bend your knees and if you want to launch a high ball the lower you set the paddle the better the movement will be.
  3. Both hands in contact with the paddle: One hand gripping the handle and support the face of the paddle on the other.
  4. After the bounce, place yourself between the wall and the ball. This point is important because, compared to the drive, in the backhand wall exit, the paddle is on the arm farther away from the wall, so you must adjust your position well to then be able to impact the ball in front of the body.

Hitting Phase

Once you have set up your arm, it's time to hit the ball:

  1. Try to make the impact at waist height.
  2. Hit the ball in front of your body, a little ahead of your hip to ensure a good hit, (you always have to be between the wall and the ball). If you hit the ball at body height you risk the ball coming up short.
  3. Depending on the height of the ball you will have to flex more or less. If the ball is low you will have to bend more and hit closer to the ground.
  4. After impact, the arm of the paddle should end up fully extended. If the ball is high the paddle will be well up and with the progressive ball at medium height.
  5. At the same time it is important to shift your body weight to the front leg.

Once you have finished the shot, remember to reposition yourself to continue playing. If your lob is deep and you have outplayed your opponents, it's time to get back to the net. A good defense is the best offense! However, if you were a little short and you don't see them clearly you should stay in the defense zone.

In the video attached to the article you will see in great detail how three paddle tennis geniuses Agustín Tapia, Majo S. Alayeto and Miguel Lamperti do it.
